Victor Umnov was born in Moscow in 1931. Umnov began his career as a professional artist in 1962. In 1964-89, he worked in the State Studio of Advertisement and Applied Graphics. He joined the USSR Union of Artists in 1972. In 1977, he started to compose short essays on such topics as art, religion and gender issues. In the 1980s, he proceeded to combine texts and visual imagery. In 2005, his book, Words and Pauses, was published in Moscow by the National Center for Contemporary Arts. Victor's personal exhibits include those in the Moscow CollectionGallery in Moscow in 1993, A-3 Gallery in Moscow in 1995, M'ArsGallery in Moscow in 2000, the Art-Harbor Gallery in St. Petersburg in 2001, the Dom Cultural Center in Moscow in 2005 and the M'Ars Center for Contemporary Arts in Moscow in 2005.
